Ancient Anti Aging Practices - By: Michi A.

These days, television and print media are full of ads for a wide range of products and services which are created to make people look and feel much younger and beautiful. These products and services include creams, diets, cosmetic surgeries, facial treatments and more. Many of these products may seem very modern and some of us might think that the anti aging techniques in the past were much less developed and much less effective than the products that we see now. But even though a lot has dramatically changed and improved since then in the field of anti aging, some anti aging practices today are actually very similar to some anti aging practices in the ancient times. Ancient Romans, Egyptians and Greeks may not have billboards or magazine subscriptions advertising the latest wrinkle cream or the latest skin care device in the market, but we can be sure that even at that time in history, people are already concerned about the effects of aging as we do today.

Since ancient times, women have known the importance of caring for the face by using natural remedies for rejuvenation and anti aging. Several myths and legends have stated that aloe vera has been a vital part of the skin care regimens of Egyptian queens such as Cleopatra. Apart from using aloe vera, Cleopatra has also been known for her anti aging methods fit for a queen such as bathing in sour milk - which actually turns out to be a good way to soften and exfoliate the skin because sour milk is high in lactic acid. Ancient Chinese women on the other hand swore by sea buckhorn for their anti aging needs. Of course, we know now that sea buckhorns are rich in antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E. In the Medieval times, boiled rosemary leaves in white wine has been documented as one of the most popular rejuvenation practices. Cosmetic surgeries on the other hand, was used by ancient Romans since the second century A.D to straighten noses, make lips smaller and remove unsightly veins.

Clearly, we can see that the quest for youth and eternal beauty had been ongoing since the start of human civilization. Many anti aging practices today such as cosmetic surgeries and the use of natural remedies have actually originated from ancient civilizations. While there may not exactly be an elixir of youth per se, modern science seems to agree with ancient anti aging practices.
