Anchor to Life - By: LaMont Campbell

In my community, over the last several weekends, we have encountered tragic events, affecting us adversely as a community. Even though, we strive for empowerment, we understand that adversity is part of the process. We can take comfort in the process because we know that the pendulum swings both ways. For every ounce of good there is an ounce of bad. Still, when we encounter the bad, we wish it was good. There are no words that can sooth tragedy. We strive for positive results in every aspect of our lives, but reality tells there will be major bumps along the way. When bad things happen, it affects us as a community. Though the event may seem isolated, or beyond our understanding, it still has an impact on our community. There is still hope because as previously stated, the pendulum swings both ways.

With every tragedy, exist the opportunity to redirect the swing of the pendulum, gain insight and go forward. When the focus is “how can I contribute to the betterment of my community”, then we give ourselves and our community a chance to grow, become empowered. If the process was that simple, we would have a perfect world. The world will never be perfect. But when we make the effort to make the world better, we allow faith, momentum and good to make their presence known. For the worst of us, there will always be someone that sees and knows the good in us. They will see and know a different person than what the rest of us see and know. As a community we need to find that goodness in them also. When we find the good in others, it dissipates the bad. With society as it exists today, that can be very hard to do. It’s a very easy trap to fall into, when we only see the bad in our communities.

There is no clear cut solution that will solve the problem but there exist a series of solutions that offers momentum towards a positive change. The first is communication. When we communicate as a whole, more information is available, and its imperative that people talk to each other in order to find a solution to the problem. Commitment is the second. When we commit as a whole we develop a common direction that benefits the entire community. The next is implementation. Decide what you want to do as a community and put your plans to action. The last is drive. All the planning and research in the world, does no one any good if there isn’t the drive necessary to bring fruition to your goals.

As we seek a better world, we are reminded that it’s a monumental task to take on and it takes strong shoulders to not succumb to the pitfalls, you see in your everyday life. This is not an easy task. Life brings us different circumstances and realities. Everyone’s situation is unique unto them and them only. Answers to each person’s situation might end with the same result, but the paths might be different. When we hold on to values that make everyone important, and display good character in our action, we allow life to flow in a positive direction.
