An introduction to Pharmaceutical Careers - By: Jonathan Walker

Pharmaceutical Careers are open to people from all sorts of backgrounds. Certainly folk with some kind of medical background would seem to be ideal, or someone with a successful record in some other sales sector. Pharmaceutical training courses are usually available for such newcomers.

Like any sort of sales career, it the most important qualification for the candidate is to have the right kind of personality. A good friend of mine acame out of university with a Sports Science degree but almost nil medical knowledge ... and, after industrial training of course, proceeded to carve out one of the most successful Pharmaceutical Careers I have ever seen.

The pharmaceutical industry has a principle unique feature. Medical science is continually improving and the population at large is eager to benefit from every such improvement. This gives the industry, as a whole, a sort of guaranteed permanence. It tends to generate the feeling that if you start off in a Pharmaceutical Careers now there will probably be work, of some kind or other, available for you for as long as you want it.

An initial job in pharmaceutical sales is perhaps the most popular way to launch oneself into a Pharmaceutical Careers. Like all sales jobs, a sales position on the pharmaceutical industry requires a degree of discipline and self motivation. But for those who have these qualities it can be a great lifestyle with great financial rewards for good measure. The wide variety of different companies with different products, with jobs available in almost every geographical area, offer the prospect of an interesting career.

Sales people in other sectors often view sales jobs in the pharmaceutical sector as being rather special, and would themselves prefer to be enjoying Pharmaceutical Careers. One of the main reasons for this is that sales personnel are often "money-driven", and they view the generous basic salaries and good commission structures in the pharmaceutical industry, with some envy. In the pharmaceutical industry the salary packages are often beyond the reach of sales persons in other sectors.

But, with the benefit of hind-sight, after many years in the pharmaceutical industry, my own view would be that to concentrate of the financial aspects alone would be to under-rate Pharmaceutical Careers. There just has to be a certain satisfaction to be obtained from knowing that your daily work not only brings you an income ... but also contributes to the overall well being of the people who buy and use your products.
