An insight into Carrom Board: The game and its accessories - By: carrom gear

One of the most fun filled and safe entertaining games in sports history is the carrom board. Though originally it is just meant as a board game, it has been widely adapted by several countries and now it is played as a sport in several tournaments.

It originated in the suburbs of India without any set of rules. In some parts of the world the game is played with a different adaptation where cues are used to strike the coins. However, the formal set of rules for playing the game was actually set pretty recently around the year 1988. At a point a maximum of 4 players is allowed to play the game.

Usually it is played as singles matches or doubles matches. The doubles matches include 2 players representing a single nation against two other players as opponents representing a different nation.

Rules:

1. The team which wins the toss starts off the game and they play for white set of coins.

2. The objective of the game is to score all coins along with the queen before the opponent does so.

3. At any point of time the side must not finish the game without scoring the queen and as long as the queen is still in play, if they do so, the opponents are awarded the game.

4. Pocketing a striker is known as a minus. And as a penalty you are meant to place one of your already pocketed coins back in the game.

5. If you pocket the striker along with the coin, you do not get another turn. However, if you place two coins back in the game for the minus, you do earn another chance.

6. Every time you pocket a coin, you get another chance to play consequently.

7. You can use any of your fingers to strike the coin. However, there is a base line and you are meant to play only from this bar line. And you are not supposed to strike a coin which is on base directly.

8. If you pocket the queen, you are supposed to follow it up with a coin from your set to earn the queen.

Accessories:

The accessories of the game are pretty limited. However, there are three essential accessories without which the game cannot be played. They are the carrom board, carrom coins and a striker. Apart from these essential accessories you have the carrom stand, carrom board cover, carrom boric or starch powder, replacement mesh, score counter etc. Replacement mesh is to collect the coins underneath the four holes of the board. Counter is to keep track of score.

In a game there are 9 white and 9 black coins along with one red (queen) coin and a striker. The carrom board powder is a must to maintain the board and improve its longevity. Without the powder the board wears and tears pretty easily. Board cover is also meant to maintain the board when t is not being played. All these accessories are available online for sale.
