An Introduction To Search Engine Optimisation - By: Jonathan Walker - Big Blue Tomato

SEO is the acronym use to describe something called Search Engine Optimisation. This is the process whereby you make the most of the words and phrases that are relevant to your website, by including them in your Meta tags and HTML, among other things. This is all part of building relative links, and allows a web searcher, that is part of how a search engine works, to be able to find your website when it goes through the process of looking for specific key phrases, thus listing your website higher up the rankings.

The more popular search engines on the Internet these days are Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask. There is a top-secret attitude among search engines, in reference to their algorithms. This is due to the fact that they do not want any anomalies occurring in the various searches. Anomalies that can be caused by spam clogging up pages. It is common for there to be hundreds or even thousands of factors in a search engine algorithm. To complicate the process further, these go through a state of constant change. The offshoot of this is that while you may be 1st in the Ask rankings, you might be 98th in the Google rankings.

A new website does not have to be indexed in order for it to appear on a search engines rankings. It can feature because of a bank link that mentions it, from a well known website. This can cause search engines to visit the site, which will then cause its content to be indexed. It is ambiguous as to how long this can take. Sometimes it can be days, and then other times it can be weeks. It is a case of the main search engine crawlers visiting and therefore indexing a new site.

There are SEO companies out there that have a great deal of knowledge on this complex subject, and can therefore carry out the service of getting you up the rankings.

These companies generally go by three names. Internet marketing, web promotion or search engine optimisation companies. Their role is to look at the functionality of your website. They can assess whether there is anything that can be done in order to make it more efficient, and therefore improve both the amount of traffic that it receives, and the position that it achieves in the ranking pages. A good company will make alterations so that your website can sustain the high ranking that it achieves, as opposed to slipping back down after a relatively short period of time. A good thing to do is to employ an SEO expert at the same time as you employ your web designer. That way you can implement good SEO techniques from the outset.
