Of late, MMORPGs or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games have seen a great surge in popularity in people of all age groups and both genders. Even though they have been around for quite some time now, it is only now that they have shed their image of being custom-made for serious gamers, and edged into other genres and media, spreading their popularity further.

An MMORPG is defined as a game in which a very large number of players can interact and compete with each other within an online world. Each player is assigned a character, depending on the genre of the game, which is then used to compete with other players to provide a truly interactive gaming experience. Each players makes decisions for the assigned characters and monitor their activity.

A key difference between MMORPGs and small-scale multiplayer games is the fact that MMORPGs are controlled by the publisher, and hence do not depend on each player's presence. There are many people playing such a game all over the world. If one logs off, the game can't afford to turn off. Therefore, these games continue in their own online world, and players are free to join in and leave any time they wish to.

Today, there are so many MMOs to choose from, that virtually any era and location can be found online in a particular game, which can be played by anyone with a good internet connection. The key here is the fact that all players have their own customized persona that can be designed according to their will, with skills either being acquired at different levels, or being there in each persona before the start of the game. True role-playing with the help of these personas is hence a key component of MMORPGs. Each player truly imagines themselves as their persona, fighting inside the virtual world, totally a part of it. They can also interact with other players' personas, strike partnerships and form teams, or make virtual enemies. The best games provide a lot of instances to interact and play their role in their virtual world. All this, happening at such a large scale, makes MMOs a much more personalized and hence more enjoyable experience.

Apart from the fun that this customization proves to be, the main goal is still to advance in the game, level by level, to enable their online self to participate in more difficult activities that are only accessible to the professionals that reach those levels. The level of difficulty of activities increases with each level of course, and the game becomes more exciting for the average young mind.

There are virtual friendships to be developed and even enemies to be made, all thanks to the true interaction between their online personas. Such is the psychology of all MMORPGs; they make the players think they truly know each other, through their personas. This enables such games to be used as a basis for academic research conducted to judge interpersonal behavior and reactions of the average human being.

Another interesting facet of MMORPGs is the psychology of the games. Because players truly interact with each other in real time, they often develop virtual friendships and feel as if they truly know each other. As a result, the games can be and are used for academic research, especially in areas related to interpersonal behavior.

The availability of MMOPRGs has improved over the last few years. They're now available around the world in many different languages and cultures, making the experience a global one to enjoy. Many of these games are organized using servers for different geographic locations, but there is option for players to join groups from other nations or backgrounds as well. Therefore, MMORPGs are gaining popularity continuously with people of all ages across genders.
