Amsterdam is located in the west of the Netherlands and is the country's largest city. Also it is of great importance because the city is the capital of the country. If we go a little deeper into the name of the city then there is a concept behind the word "Amsterdam". Basically, the concept is that there is a dam inside the city whose name is "Amstel" and also there is a dam on the river so combining these two words the name of the city popped out as "Amsterdam".

Before your Amsterdam Holidays it is interesting to know that there is actually an apparent contradiction to the positive aspects of the city, and this embodies much of the spirit of Amsterdam. Many of those Amsterdam vacationers who have strolled the city for a long time may know that Amsterdam is worldly known as a place where the possession and sale of cannabis are effectively legal, or at least decriminalized. For the most part, people of Amsterdam themselves can't really be bothered with this stuff.

Part of what makes Amsterdam such a beautiful, romantic and picturesque city is the canal system that runs throughout the Amsterdam city center and out into the surrounding districts. On a more somber note, one of the most frequently visited tourist attractions is the Anne Frank House, which is where she and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II. The house, and the attic where the Frank family lived, remains virtually untouched and visitors often leave with a poignant reminder of the horrors of that period of history.
