This Museum was built in 1869 and is located in the western side of the city at 79th Street in Central Park West. It is known for its huge historical collections. This museum was originally located at old arsenal building in Central Park before it was moved to the present location because of its expanded facilities, in 1874.

Scientists from all over the world visit this museum to perform research. Some of the important names who visited this museum includes: Roy Chapman Andrews, Margaret Mead, and Franz Boas. Adults and young children equally enjoy their visits to this museum as they have too much to explore here.

The Fossil Halls

The Fossil Halls contains over 1,000,000 vertebrate fossils. Two dinosaur halls are also located in fossil halls. Tyrannosaurus Rex and Stegosaurus are the two major displays in Fossil Halls. A ten story Child Frick Building is located in the inner courtyard and is a major storage facility for fossils. Fossils are kept in the lower floor of this building while laboratories and offices of the staffs are located on the top three floors.

Rose Center for Earth and Space

Rose center was recently added in the museum. It is 120 feet high with an area of 333,500 square feet. Rose center has a Hayden planetarium, established in 1935 by Charles Hayden, exhibiting space and universe items. Large numbers of galaxy and star items are displayed in the Hall of Universe. The most significant feature of Rose Center is Heilburn Cosmic Pathway, which is opened on 19th February 2000.

The Milstein Hall of Ocean Life

This hall contains a number of ocean fossils, such as squid, dolphins and porpoises. The largest fossil in the hall is that of 94 foot blue whale.

The Cultural halls

Many major works of Frank Bois and Margaret Mead are put into display in Cultural Halls. A wide range of display is put in this Halls that gives you an insight of different cultures around globe like South America, South Pacific, Africa and Asia.

Bird and Mammals Halls

A large number of animals and birds in a three dimensional life like scene are displayed in this Bird and Mammals Halls.

Imax Theatre

This theatre offers movie presentation to the tourists. All sorts of natural geographic movies are included in the collection. The most recent film added in the IMAX Theatre is Galapagos, which is a discovery show about animals living in Galapagos Island.

Visiting the AMNH

The museum remains open the entire week, except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas day. The timing of the museum for tourists is from 10 a.m. to 5.45 p.m. The business hours of the museum are extended to 8 p.m. on first Friday of each month.

Museum has a store from where you can buy souvenirs or other items from a large range of items. Museum is equally a great place to visit for young as well as old visitors.
