The United States Capitol in Washington DC is considered to be an architectural landmark in the world. As the legislative branch of the US government, it is not only a symbol of democracy and pride, but has a special historical significance to the government and people of the country. Located at the top of the Capitol Hill, the Capitol is also a great place for tourist attraction.

Construction of this historic building was started in the last decade of the 18th century. It was burned down during the 1812 war after which it was rebuilt by 1819. With a floor area of over 16 and a half acres this is a colossal building that features the neo-classical architecture and looks extremely impressive.

The building is 750x230 meters long and 350x105 meters wide. The five-storied building has some 540-odd rooms and there is a huge domed room in the center. You will also find the statues of eminent people from different fields of life displayed at the National Statuary Hall, at the building premises.

The building went through series of renovation, rebuilding, restoration and expansion even recently, but even after two centuries, it looks surprisingly consistent in its forms and architecture.

There are tours available to the Capitol. Earlier, self-guided tours were allowed. But owing to security reasons, currently, a lot of restrictions have been maintained. At present, you can take a tour in a small group and with the help of a professional guide. The tours are offered in batches from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am until 3:30 pm.

The building is opened for public viewing everyday (except Sundays) and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year Day. There are special tours the information that requires prior bookings, the details of which are available on the US Capitol's official website.
