Alzheimer's is a progressive, degenerative disease and another form of dementia which affects the memory, thinking and behavior and eventually loses control in reasoning, planning, language and perception. This disease is a neurogenerative one. It is becoming tragically common. It is estimated that there are currently 18 million people worldwide with Alzheimer¡¯s disease.

Alzheimer's can strike without warning, and over a long period of time. What you first suspect are just warning signs of aging become much more alarming signs. Sure, we all forget where we put that bill, or our glasses or our car keys, but not every day. While we all lose track of our days, more often than not we can figure out what day or time it is without too much trouble.

The exact cause of Alzheimer's disease is not known but it is thought to be depending on genetic and environmental factors. Alzheimer's disease is diagnosed by its distinguishing symptoms and by excluding other causes of dementia. The time span of the disease may vary from five and 20 years according to the age in which it got affected.

Alzheimer's disease occurs around 50% of persons over the age of 85 but it is not normal as people lived over 100 years of age never developed Alzheimer's disease. It normally occurs in people above the age 70. One of the risk factors of this disease is the advancing age. The frequency of the disease increases as the population ages.

There is currently no cure and virtually no medical treatment for Alzheimer's disease. However, drugs can help to slow down the progression or relieve some symptoms and delay the need for residential care. Sometimes anti-depressant medicines are prescribed to help treat the depression that can be associated with Alzheimer's disease. Some people may benefit from anti-psychotic medicines.
