Allergies and asthma are not the same nor can these terms be used interchangeably. However, there is a certain link in these terms and many a times both these may be treated together with same medications. However, Asthma is not termed as a disease and considered as a medical condition characterized by blockage in the respiratory system and causing air hunger. Allergies are the response of the immune bodies to the environmental pollutants or irritants such as chemicals and dust. An allergy may lead to asthma condition and be serious. However, effective medications and prompt attention can resolve both the conditions.
Causes of Allergy:
People may be allergic to pollens or dust particles and many other such things. An allergy however, may not be restricted to the respiratory organs but it may affect various organs or parts of the body such as skin.
Allergy can be in simple words termed as certain things being considered as invaders by our body and its immune system. Just because the immune system unwelcome some substances and attacks them, it may lead to allergic reactions such as running nose or redness of eyes.
Causes of Asthma:
Asthma condition is closely related with the allergic reactions. Asthma attack may trigger in response to an allergic reaction where the immune system of the body restrains foreign substances and react with chemicals to destroy them. Some times this reaction to avoid letting the irritants enter the body, may cause blockages in the airways and respiratory system. Such a condition may bring asthma attack and strive for oxygen.
Types of Allergies:
• Dust Allergy – This allergy is due to the microorganisms found in the dust particles and is a common type of allergy.
• Pet Allergy – The cause for this allergy is controversial as some say it triggers due to fur of the pets whereas studies state main contributor as a specific protein present in pet’s saliva.
• Food Allergy – This follows due to intolerance of a certain food item or the chemicals reaction found in the food item.
• Smoke Allergy – Smoke from any toxic chemicals or cigarette may trigger this allergy
• Hay Fever – This is a common type of allergy, which may present symptoms such as cold and flu.
Allergies and asthma are closely related to each other as most of the times some allergies have severe allergic reactions leading to asthma attack. However, not every allergy should lead to asthma. Asthma and allergies may have a common medication to ease the condition. Usually, leukotriene modifier is administered for allergy and asthma condition. A long-term asthma treatment may include allergy shots that amend the immune response to certain allergies, which may lead to asthma attack.
