The increasing popularity of compact flash cards has ushered in a revolution in many associated fields where compact flash cards are now used. Since there ratio of price to available storage space is very favourable, the cards have become the rage for the present generation without any doubt at all. The main point however is how well they perform when pitched against the other technologies available in the market.

As far as the question of durability and ruggedness is concerned, compact flash technology cards have known to give better performances when subjected to photographic shocks, accidents and impacts. They can withstand a lot more physical damage than the other cards available in the market today. Also, there compatibility with the ATA and IDE, they are extremely convenient to use along with embedded systems in the form of solid state drives. Also, they score very well on the scale of ease of operation as they can be easily interfaced with PC's. In case of a size mismatch in the slot of the Pc and the memory card, cheap adaptors are abundantly available in the market which makes them very easy and convenient to use.

An additional feature of the compact flash cards is that they do not have any kind of built in features that are cryptographic in nature as are supported by some USB flash drives and many other memory card formats available in the market. This feature can be attributed as a positive one in the sense that the standards are an open one ant subject to any restrictions as far as the licensing agreement is concerned. But when it comes to the competitive edge of the available memory cards, this makes them a relatively poor scorer in comparison to the other memory card formats present in the market.

Compact flash memory cards are available with much higher capacities of storage than the conventional memory cards. The compact flash memory cards, however, lack the provision of a switch that offers mechanical write protection to the device. Another possible disadvantage, though highly improbable, is that in case a compact flash memory card is not inserted into the device properly, it could cause considerable harm to the device obtaining data from the memory card. But this does not usually occur as the design of the slots is done keeping in mind all the factors beforehand. So proper designing takes care of possible disastrous effects of improper insertion.

One disadvantage that compact flash card devices possess in comparison to the competing forces in the market is that of limitations it has with respect to availability of sizes. In case of very slim devices, the use of these cards cannot be made. MicroSD cards offer memory storage in a much more compact size. But this factor can also be viewed from a different perspective as well. In case of the compact flash memory cards, it is comparatively easier to remove and insert memory cards from the parent devices.
