All about Plantation Shutters - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Do you want some value added to your house? Then you could go ahead and install some plantation shutters to your windows. You can ask a realtor to verify this claim. The reason for this is that these window shutters are known for their longevity and their permanency. Of course, the other kinds can also add some beauty and a little refined look to your homes. But the plantation shutters are the type of window coverings that you are sure could last for a really long time. They might even surpass your whole lifetime. And this makes them very different from other blinds or shades.

This is just one of the reasons why these window shutters are a good choice for your home. The added bonus of the life span they offer definitely are plus points.

But one must remember that the plantation shutters are not the cheapest and most affordable window coverings available in the market. They are also a bit more difficult to install compared to other window treatments like roller shades. However, with proper care they will last you a good long time. And it wouldn't be a bad idea to make a lifelong investment on them.

Plantation shutters may be made of wood, composite or faux wood. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Yet, they all offer the same functionality as the other materials.
When you go for the wood window shutters, they are guaranteed to be a hit. The wood adds a little luxurious look to your home. It also offers a very warm ambience to the home. However, this can possibly be duplicated by other man-made materials. The wood can come with several stains or paints that you could choose from. However, it would defeat the purpose of getting wood shutters if you will have them painted.

One thing that you should remember as well is that wood is prone to warping, bowing and some scratching. This can be avoided with proper care for the wood.

Now, faux wood or composite shutters are made of man-made materials. They can be made of recycled wood covered with a tough outer shell. They also come with a wide array of paints and stains, just like the authentic material. When you have the plantation shutters stained, you get a more authentic look of wood. One thing that is admirable with composite window shutters is they are more sturdy than wood. They don't crack, bow or fade as easily. They are perfect for humid or hot climates.

Vinyl composites are also used for shutter panels. They are the least expensive type of material that you could go for when it comes to window shutters. They are also the sturdiest and can seem to take some beating. They are best used for bathrooms, children's rooms or kitchens. If you are going for durability at a much more affordable price, you can opt to have vinyl or PVC shutters. The decision lies on what you need and how you want to design your home.
