All You Need To Know About Collecting Best Vintage Watches - By: Kalmar Antiques

The past ten years or so, has seen a massive resurgence in collecting vintage watches and this is a trend that does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Generally speaking, a vintage watch will be one that is over 20 years old, however there is a massive niche market for those watches that are well under this age.

These will usually appeal to those in the 25 to 40 year old demographic, who are after a sought after watch that at the same time will have a unique or particular feature on or about it that can’t be found on the more “modern” watches.

Perhaps it will apply to Panerai Luminor watch, or a Limited Edition Breitling watch or a re-issue of an earlier watch such as the Tag Heuer “Monaco” re-issue, with these watches being very popular with the under 50 year old bracket, as for the most part they are affordable, yet not a “common” or “cheap” watch that will be readily seen.

Another advantage and reason why watches such as these are sought after, is the simple fact that they can be worn for any occasion. No longer does a watch have to be a “dress watch” for special occasions, so now a very large Panerai can be worn with a suit on Friday, and with a pair of jeans on Saturday.

Many watch companies have looked to the past for inspiration in designing a “new” watch, and often what looked good 30 or 40 years ago, can still look great today.

Omega, IWC, Panerai, Rolex, Breitling, Longines, Tag Heuer are just some of the watch companies that have re-issued earlier models.

Typically, the watches that are re-issued made a mark in history such as the Omega Speedmaster “Moon watch”, or were designed for a particular purpose, such as the Breitling Navitimer which was designed for pilots.

So no longer is collecting watches just for the elite, or hard to obtain category, and while collecting watches or searching for that particular watch can run into the tens of thousands of dollars, and perhaps take years to find, in the meantime, there are some fantastic “future classics” out there!
