All You Need To Know About A Cholesterol Ratio - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Health is something that we should always be focused on and you need to keep an eye out for any signs that you might be in some kind of health danger. Use your cholesterol ratio as an indicator and make sure that you eat the right foods and that is as healthy as possible.

There is quite a precise way in which one calculates this ratio. You achieve a number on the cholesterol ration by dividing the level of HDL cholesterol into one's total cholesterol. According to the American Heart Association, you should have a maximum ratio of 5:1 and the best ratio would be considered a 3. 5:1.

The ratio serves as an indicator for health professionals as to your chances of having heart disease. This is very important as it is a good way of letting you know how you should be living your life. If you are in the danger zone then make sure that you take action.

Regular checkups on the ratio are very important and most doctors would say that you should do it about every six months. If they are not happy with your ration then they are likely to recommend some form of treatment for you. This could either be in the form of medication or they could put a meal plan together for you.

If you are given the option then it is recommended that you go with the diet. It might seem like this is more difficult but you do not want to be on medication for the rest of your life if you can avoid it. Once you go on to cholesterol medication you usually have to stay on it for a very long time.

It does make sense then to try and eat healthy as much as possible and you would want to stay away from foods that could increase your cholesterol. Examples of this include butter, red meat with fat on it and also ice cream. Don't worry though as there is a host of healthy foods that you can eat.

While this may start to sound difficult, let's focus on what you can enjoy. You are able to take a good old bite into fish. These have the right fats for you and are strong in omega oils which we all need. Other good foods include walnuts and oat bran. Both of these have the additional benefit of aiding your digestive processes. These foods will help to keep your cholesterol ratio within safe levels.
