Alistair Overeem To Face Returning Brock Lesnar On December 30. - By: JohannaT

The much anticipated bout between former UCF heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar and former StrikeForce champ Alistair Overeem puts the rumor to rest that Lesnar opted for an early retirement. UFC president, Dana White confirmed that Lesnar will face the Dutch champion before the year ends in December.
Bragging that he is the best Mix Martial Arts fighter, the Amsterdam native, Alistair Overeem will be making his debut in the Octagon scheduled for five rounds. The winner in this bout will earn the right to face the winner between the Cain Velasquez – Junior dos Santos fight slated on November 12, 2011. And given that Velasquez wins and Lesnar triumps over Overeem, a rematch is touted to be one of the biggest fights in the UFC.
Overeem, the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion has not suffered any defeat since 2007 and just came out from a victory against Fabricio Werdum in the StrikeForce Heavyweight Grand Prix last June 18. However, StrikeForce dropped him from its roster when he decline to fight Antonio Silva slated September of this year and was eventually released from StrikeForce. “Reem,” has also been busy outside Strikeforce and defeated UFC prospect Todd Duffee to wrestle the Dream’s interim heavyweight crown last year.
On the other hand, Lesnar who is recuperating from diverticulitis have put all speculations to rest that he is retiring from the world of mix martial arts for good, and said that he is coping well after the surgery. Reports said that Lesnar is feeling 100% already and will start his training and conditioning the soonest time possible. He was supposed to face Dos Santos in UFC 131 but eventually withdrawn from the match after his symptoms resurfaced. The former NCAA wrestling champion was first diagnosed in 2010 with an intestinal disorder. His last appearance in the Octagon was last October 2010 in UFC 121, wherein he was knocked down by Velasquez only in the first round via a TKO, giving up his UFC heavyweight title. The loss was his second, with Frank Mir giving him his first set back in UFC 81, but gets back at Mir when he defeated him in UFC 100.
Critics and MMA analyst says that Overeem who has a 35-11-1 record, enjoys most of the odds considering that Lesnar 5-2-0, have been out of action for nearly one year. The 31 year old Overeem on the other ahdn, not only defended his Strikeforce belt, but also continue to make waves after conquering other prestigious tournaments like the K-1 World Grand Prix. However, some sports analysts were also quick to defend the 34 year old, 6’3” Lesnar, stating that “Reem” has never had the change to face a wrestler as powerful as Lesnar and has not met anybody as strong and as athletic as Brock. Odds maker however believe that the action will be coming from Overeem, as Lesnar is the type of fighter who reacts slower and gets punched first before engaging in the brawl.
When asked about his upcoming UFC debut, Overeem said that he is very excited to face Lesnar who according to him is a big name and a dangerous fighter in the UFC. He believes that this fight is a dream match. He also added that Lesnar is a big guy who is not just very athletic but a very good wrestler capable of making exciting takedowns.
“There are going to two big trucks going at it on a collision course,” Overeem answering the question.
White through his twitter, confirmed the dream fight between Overeem and Lesnar and will be held at the MGM Garden Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 30, 2011.
