Since the early 1990s Warcraft has enjoyed amazing success and a growing number of fans. With World of Warcraft becoming the most played MMORPG in the history of computer gaming many people thought its supreme position would go unchallenged. That may be about to change in a very big way!

Warcraft may be the current giant in the massively multi-player online role playing gaming world but there is a newcomer that is looking to knock it off its pedestal. Aion is a new generation MMORPG that has hit the gaming world with a bang. With its crisp visual imagery, engaging story and seamless play can Aion really compete with World of Warcraft for the title of biggest MMORPG?

As far as the visuals go Aion is amazing. The fantasy world of the game, Atreia, just looks fantastic! Just like all games in this genre you get to play with a melee of weapons and items and investigate your ability to use some nifty powers. Unlike other games in this genre however you get to fly around your environment without the aid of an expensive (and hard to get) mounted beast (or flying carpet - you WoW tailors know what I mean)!

The game was developed in Korea by the developer NCsoft.

Aion is actually a character is the game who is a little like Zeus of ancient mythology in that he created humans to tend his world of Atreia (just like Zeus created humans on earth to give devotion to the gods of Olympus).

In world of Warcraft you have the opportunity to play against the environment (PvP) or against other players (PvP). However, Aion integrates the two and refers to it as PvPvE!

The ability to fly in Aion makes it different from Warcraft because there you have to earn your flying mount but in Aion you can do it yourself. Flying is great but the really neat feature is that you can engage in some airborne combat!

The game has already won “Best Korean Game of the Year” which is no small feat. Aion is graphically very stylish and engaging. It is wonderful to look at. Its gameplay is equally well conceived and designed. This is truly a great game that will become very big all over the planet.

It is thought that Aion is going to take the world by storm in the coming months ahead. Will Aion take over from World of Warcraft? I guess we will just have to wait and see.

WoW is the biggest online game for a reason and it is always trying to improve. By releasing timely expansions, the latest being Cataclysm, Blizzard seem to be securing their market dominance.

You should not discount Aion altogether though. This game is bringing something new and exciting to this genre and I would not be surprised to read someday that it has overtaken WoW to become the world's biggest online game!
