Agriculture deaths - two thirds in Scottish workers - By: Timothy Leman

A spokesperson for the HSE commented on the report, “Agriculture is still one of the most dangerous professions in Britain and the Scottish fatality statistics sadly support this fact. What is most frustrating is that the causes of incidents remain stubbornly the same such as falls from height and overturned vehicles. These incidents can be avoided, often through simple, low-cost steps. That's why we are continuing our programme of Safety and Health Awareness Days and why we are committing to working closely with the industry and regulatory partners. Everyone has a role to play in reducing death and injury.”

NFU Scottish President added, “If we are to turn around our industry's tragic record for deaths and injuries then farmers and their staff need to change their mind set when it comes to safety on farm. The dangers and risks associated with farming are a permanent part of everyday life on a farm and will not change. However, what must change is the way those working in the industry regard the health and safety of themselves, their family and their workers. We are committed to working with Government and agencies to help all those who live and work on Scottish farms to reach the stage where safe practice is second nature.”

According to figures published earlier this year by HSE, two thirds of all Scottish worker deaths are in the agriculture industry. Workplace injuries and fatalities are not uncommon, and health and safety companies are urging all businesses to review their health and safety procedures.

Work place incidents, and unfortunately, fatalities, lead many companies to enforce strict health and safety guidelines. Many practises are now a legal requirement.

This is for the protection of the employee as well as the company. With the latest “sue them” culture, many companies try and cover themselves against workplace injuries and subsequent claims from employees who seek money for their injury as a way of compensation.

Forward thinking companies seek employment law support and in some cases, employment law advice following a claim. This enables the company to deal with any incidents fairly, and properly, allowing the employee to feel safe in their place of work. With death in the workplace still an issue, and looking at the recent statistics for workplace deaths in Scotland and in agriculture, it is vital that businesses take serious steps towards improving their health and safety as well as reviewing it regularly.
