Agricultural Production and Irrigation in Tasmania - By: Van Diemen

Tasmania is one of the best places in Australia that can be considered an ideal place for quality food production. Having mild climate, good quality water, four distinct seasons with a tranquil and clean atmosphere, it is no wonder that the state now boasts of producing high quality agricultural products for the country. But with every success comes a degree of hard work involved. Maintaining production in a sustainable manner is a continuing challenge that is constantly being met by the population in the area.

Through the encouragement and help of the government, Tasmania is fast emerging as a prime mover in developing programs that will enhance innovation and productivity in the agricultural sector. To sustain the agriculture sector, the state and its farming community have also placed great emphasis in water irrigation. Through the years, the population has come up with long terms solutions that mainly focus on developing and investing heavily in improving and modernizing its various irrigation systems.

Today, there are several widely used irrigation methods used over all the world. These are flood irrigation, furrow irrigation, spray irrigation and drip irrigation. Flood irrigation is considered the cheapest and most low tech form of irrigation that is mostly used in developing countries. Through this method, a large amount of water is brought to the field then flows on the ground among the crops. On the other hand, furrow irrigation, is a type of flood irrigation wherein the water poured on the field is diverted to go through narrow channels dug between the rows of crops.

Next on the list is drip irrigation and spray irrigation. Both of these methods are the more expensive types of irrigation. Usually used to irrigate fruits and vegetables, the drip irrigation system is composed mainly of perforated pipes. They are placed by rows of crops or buried along their root lines which give out water directly onto the crops that need it.

The type of irrigation preferred by a lot of growers in Tasmania is the pivot irrigation which is a type of spray irrigation system. The centre pivot irrigation system is considered as an efficient manner to irrigate a large field of land with the use of minimum machinery. Advances in technology has introduced to the agricultural sector the Low Energy Precision Application (LEPA) centre pivot system that has further boosted irrigation efficiency from about 60% to more than 90%.

In order to produce high quality products, the Tasmanian government and agriculture sector likewise understand the need for getting high quality irrigation equipment at all times. Durable and efficient irrigators such as travelling irrigators, pump sets, hard hoses and other pertinent tools of the trade are key to the success of the growers. It is also no wonder why irrigation equipment manufacturers and suppliers are thriving in the region as they play a pivotal role in catering to the needs of the agriculture industry. They, together with the government, organizations, individual farmers and companies all work together to further boost Tasmania’s standing as a key agricultural player in bringing forth domestic and international revenue for Australia.
