Aging population leaves Dorset’s counsellors at full stretch. - By: New Horizons

Dorset counselling services are being kept busy as pensioners turn to therapy to handle the strain of moving into retirement and eventually old age, according to the latest anecdotal evidence.

Dorset’s counselling providers, both state and private, have seen a major upsurge in demand over the last 25 years as life-expectancy has increased by a massive 40%.

An ‘Age Map’ released by the government shows Dorset will surpass the national average of 22.2 per cent of the population aged over 65 by 2031 with East Dorset and Christchurch, an area with the highest proportion of pensioners in the UK, exceeding this figure by a huge margin.

These areas currently have an aging population over the age of 65 which is double the national average – running at a whopping 30%

But the south of England has always been a magnet for couples looking to retire after selling the family home once the children have flown the nest.
This has translated into the proportion of the population seeking Dorset’s counselling services being higher than an observer could reasonably expect to see in another part of the country.

Dorset counselling and life coaching provider New Horizons has noticed a big increase in demand for its services as people come to terms with how they plan to live the rest of their lives.

Sue Terry from Dorset Counselling and life-coaching firm New Horizons said: “You might think that planning for an extended life was quite a nice problem to have, but it can be stressful for all types of people.”

“When the pace of life inevitably slows, it can be difficult to fill all of the day with stimulating activities and sadly it is not uncommon for aging persons in the community to become depressed.” She added.
