There was a time when cars had just arrived that tail lights were not considered necessary and cars were manufactured without them. When the roads got paved and cars could go faster then the need for tail lights was felt by some people to announce the presence of their car on the road. And yet not everyone thought them to be necessary and quite a few regarded them as an unnecessary expense. It was only in the 1950s that the manufacturing of single tail light cars was stopped. Since then of course things have changed dramatically. Today a high performing tail light is a must.
