Affinity Schemes - are you missing out on PMI's greatest kept secret? - By: Gareth Hoyle1

In these harsh economic times we often forget to look after our health as we should. Diet and exercise is put to the side as we focus on the work aspect of our lives. You’re probably starting to fear redundancy and unemployment and feel that you need to work through this recession as much as you can – everything else can be sorted out later. But can it? There are a variety of health conditions that can creep up on you without you knowing – meaning they can strike when you least expect it. The NHS are under enough pressure as it is and with more cuts on the way it looks like that public health service your relying on will be less than adequate. If you want real peace of mind when it comes to your health you’ll need to get yourself some private cover. If you’re worried about the price of PMI then you shouldn’t - as you may already be entitled to a generous insurance discount.

Affinity schemes have been around for years and they can offer you a solution to your budget crisis. The schemes run through clubs and trading bodies that have connections with PMI companies. If you are deemed as a member you may be eligible for some serious discounts. This is because the linked corporation can offer the PMI company a large volume of business. So ask your boss, manager or association leader to see if you’re eligible for some cheaper PMI (private medical insurance).

You should note that the schemes can vary considerably in discount size. However nearly all of the schemes in the market today offer prices and packages that are far more competitive than a regular customer’s policy. For example, Aviva have a connection to the RAC and allow their members to enter their insurance at a much higher no claims discount level - which heavily reduces their premium cost. Some companies offer bespoke deals for their members allowing them to choose between a variety of packages (this option is a great way to differentiate insurance based on the amount of danger a person comes close with on a day to day basis).

Voluntary schemes work in a very similar way to affinity schemes and they can offer just as much of a saving. They work by an organisation offering company funded PMI to a member of senior management. The PMI company will take note of this subscription and offer individual health benefits to applicants from the company concerned. This means that even if your company is not linked with any PMI companies you can still enjoy a discount – you’ll just need to get your head manager privately covered!
