Advise on Buying a Cycling Helmet - By: nulls

Cycling has become increasingly more popular in the past few years, the freedom and adventure of exploring the countryside on your bike is wonderful. There are also numerous health benefits associated, and of course for those of us wanting to lose weight, this is the perfect way.

You have just purchased a brand new bicycle, and can't wait to get out there and feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face. But don't go yet, you now need your cycling helmet.

Head injuries count for 75 % of our annual 700 deaths, and research has proven that helmets can prevent,80 percent of cycling head injuries. According to another statistic, over 500.00 people are treated in E.R. as a result of cycling So a cycling helmet is a must...

The size and fit of your helmet is of the utmost importance. Cycling helmets are made from expanded foam polystyrene. Polystyrene is rigid and therefore be moulded into any shape.

Ensure your helmet fits well to give you vital and adequate protection. It should sit level on your head, not too tight, but snug. The cycling helmet should have a smooth round outer shell,no sharp points, this will prevent catching on low hanging branches, or bushes.

Helmets tend to get warm, especially in Summer, the more expensive cycling helmets tend to have more air vents.

Look for vents and sweat control, not too many vents as this will mean less vital padding inside the helmet. Take your time with the fitting, most good Stores will assist you with this very important purchase. Wide chin strap is more comfortable than the very thin ones. With the helmet in place, shake your head from side to side, the cycle helmet should only move less than an inch in any direction.

Check for a standard sticker, C.P.S.C ( consumer product safety commission) Never buy a helmet without a proof of standard.

Choose a bright colour to be more obvious to other bicyclists and motorists.

There is a new helmet type using slip plain technology, an inner lining is used, which on impact slides over the shell, thus reducing the likelihood of concussion from 'rotation force'.

Remember the more expensive helmet does not necessarily give the best protection.

Never, ever buy a second hand cycling helmet, the previous owner may have had an accident while wearing it. There may be undetected 'hairline fractures' and the helmet will not give you that vital protection if you have a crash.

So get on your bicycle, explore, reduce pollution, conserve limited oil supplies, get healthy, But please wear your biking helmet.
