Advice for Dating - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Dating is a social activity where two people assess the suitability of each other for an intimate relationship or even marriage. In more conservative cultures, this process was called courtship which did not involve any physical contact and was usually in the presence of a chaperone. While dating is common, one should take care with who they choose and how they let go when they feel it is not working out.

Though one doesn't promise a long term relationship when he or she is dating, most develop into one with time. The wise thing to do when you start dating a person is to look for compatibility on issues important to you. Though a lot of people say opposites attract, it doesn't always work out when it comes to dating. Find a person with common interest and with the same intellectual level.

Getting into a physical relationship with a person as a temporary thing even when you know he/she is not right for you is a bad idea, not just morally but also scientifically. Science tells us that with intimacy comes the commitment which is why experts say one should never get intimate with a person he/she doesn't completely like. This could be the reason many marriages end up in divorce after a few years. The levels of chemicals that make one commit often get reduced once a child is born which is why most couples divorce around that stage as they begin to see their partner without getting blinded by emotions.

For some people dating comes easy but for some others it takes an effort. One of the simple things a person can be to be accepted as a potential partner is to be presentable. You don't have to be handsome or beautiful to be dateable, though many may think they should be. However shallow it sounds, a person who dresses neatly in clean clothes will get brownie points over a person who is shabby or looks like he is trying too hard. One of the simplest things one can do to be accepted is to be clean. Oral and physical hygiene is what most people, sometime even unconsciously, look for in a partner.

Most people are innately drawn to kindness and other such positive qualities. All these are qualities one will look for in a potential father or mother of his or her child. So a person who is average looking but is caring and kind will score over a person who is handsome but is rude and mean.

Dating a person you already know is comparatively safer than dating a stranger, especially for women. Online dating has become a very common way of meeting people this past decade and with these come a lot of question on how important it is to be careful what you do or how much information you give away online. Though we are not telling you to be paranoid, look for signs to see what the other person's intentions are and if you are careful, its not that difficult.

Most often the people who try to know more about you, your family and try to find if you have common interests are genuine in their intentions. When you are trying to get to know them better, you should feel that they are doing the same as well. If it is a blind date or if you are meeting a stranger from the internet for the first time, try to meet at a public place for safety reasons. The best way to start dating someone is to be friends first. This way when you date them, you already like them; you will know them inside out and know that you are compatible.
