Advice For Employers Deciding Which Employment Agency To Use - By: Cara Brownethorpe

There are many employment agencies that may be able to help you find good staff. It is easy to find a local agency from a geographically targeted internet search such as ‘employment agency Yeovil’, ‘employment agencies Yeovil’ or ‘recruitment agency Yeovil’ but there are a few things you should check before choosing one agency over another.

If you are in a fairly general area of business then you should look at a broad range of agencies. However, if you are in a specialised industry you will probably need a sector specific agency.

When checking out a sector specific agency, make sure that someone there actually has experience in the industry and that they regularly fill jobs of the type you are looking to recruit for. Because you will be the one paying for the service (not the potential employee) you want to make sure that the CV’s you receive are all good quality and relevant. You should make sure that the agency checks the references of candidates so that you know your potential applicants are right for the job.

Check out the agency staff and speak to them, either on the phone or face to face. They should be up to speed with employment law in your area and they should be asking you lots of questions to find out what sort of staff would be right for you. Recruiters should be aware of the ethical and business issues that can affect you and they should also be trained to select and interview possible candidates so that you receive well matched applicants.

Make sure they subscribe to rigorous codes of practice and standardisation. They should be committed to high performance and good ethics.

The company as a whole should develop its own emplyees and keep them up to date with relevant training. A company with professional qualifications is a good sign as is one that is part of an industry body that you can complain to.

Ask to speak to a suitably placed candidate to see if they are happy in their new job. Also check to see if the company has case studies from success stories and testimonials from satisfied employers. Contact an employer they have helped and find out about the service and candidates that they received.

Look for media coverage on the company. If they are reputable and doing well, you should find good media coverage of them.

Do they believe in professional qualifications and developing their own staff? Look for recruiters with industry qualifications, qualified consultants will be conversant in the legal, ethical and business issues and trained to select and interview candidates for accurate matching.

With the high costs of looking for your own staff it can save you time and money using an employment agency. Thoroughly checking the agency you propose to work with should lead to a good working relationship that is mutually beneficial.
