Advantages Of Using Bamboo Shades - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Everyone is turning green. Not literally though but rather, people are choosing greener or more environmentally friendly measures when it comes to home or office décor. Aside from making a statement about saving the world's resources, using green products are also becoming more affordable alternatives to the conventional choices. This is primarily why bamboo shades are now considered as hot property in the market. Among the long lists of window shade products, for example, bamboo is garnering a lot of attention and a steady stream of new patrons. So what benefits can you really get out of buying and installing bamboo window shades? Here are a few:

1. It is biodegradable. Obviously, this is always on the top of the list. Most bamboo shade products have undergone very little processing as compared to most other wood products. For one thing, bamboo wood is sought after for its natural colorations and markings. Therefore, bamboo shades are never painted over, darkly varnished or chemically treated to alter its color. At the most, a light varnish is applied or a thin strip of lamination is used to provide the shades more tensile strength. All these translate to: the wood is easier to recycle back into the soil with little or no negative effect in terms of nutrient absorption.

2. It is energy efficient. Most shades are installed to provide some form of protection from too much glare coming from the outside. However, there are times when the shades can completely block off the light as well. When chosen correctly to suit the style and dimensions of the windows, bamboo shades can help keep out most of the blinding light without keeping out the illumination altogether. This can be considered as an energy saving measure since you can let natural light in whenever, as opposed to switching on the electrical power.

Additionally, bamboo repels heat well, which makes it ideal to use in summer homes. You do may not have to turn on the air-conditioning that often during the hotter parts of the year. And this can easily slash off a lot of dollars from your utility bills in the long run.

3. Most authentic bamboo-made shades have very unique designs. As such, there are four types of shades available: grass weaves, matchsticks, raw bamboo (also called tortoise shell) and bamboo tubes.

Grass weave and matchstick shades are the least expensive options, and can be availed of if you want uniformity all throughout your home or office. Colored threads or fibers are usually interwoven in these two aforementioned shade types, which can provide any pattern or visual effect you want. This is a better trade off than simply using colored fabric shades or multi-colored painted wood or vinyl.

On the other hand, if it is true individuality you are after, you might want to buy shades made from raw bamboo or bamboo tubes. With these two types, you are guaranteed that no two shades are alike. Individual bamboo slats and select tubes (made from very young bamboo) are pieced together to provide both form and functionality.
