Advantages Of Online Auction Business Model - By: kathy jhones

Technological developments witnessed in the last decade have made it possible for small-scale businesses to have access to a wider market that they would not otherwise accessed. This has enabled such businesses to increase their sales volumes, in effect realize increased profits. This has been made possible by the ease at which businesspersons can set up their websites through which they offer their products and services for sale. In particular, the possibility to set up online auction business has enabled thousands of businesses to sell their products or services at higher sales prices as buyers compete in buying the same at prices they themselves set.

In online auctions, buyers who are otherwise referred to as bidders place bids for products or services offered on a site, with each bidder indicating the price at which he/she is prepared to spend on a product or service. Normally, the prices indicated on products or services as the starting price is usually low but as bidders place their bids, they compete against each other, thereby raising the price. Products or services to be auctioned are usually listed for a determined period. Upon expiry of auction period, the winner(s) are announced and asked to effect payment. It is upon an online auction site to effect immediate shipment of paid-for products or initiate a paid-for service.

Unlike online auctions where bidders are not charged for placing bids, penny auction sites require bidders to register and pay a minimum amount to be able to place bids. Auction business over the Internet presents several advantages. This business model has no time constraints and both bidders and sellers can access a site at any time and conduct a transaction. Sellers and bidders do not need to be physically present to conduct an auction. The can transact from any location in the world, so long as they are connected to the Internet.

Whether online or penny auctions, auctions sites attract a large number of both sellers and bidders. For sellers, the potential to sell their items at higher prices because of a large number of bidders is certainly there. For bidders, access to varied items, services and the possibility to buy items at relatively low prices is there. Because both online and penny auction sites bring together a large number of bidders, more sellers are encouraged to avail their items or services. This in effect attracts more bidders, thereby creating a virtuous circle that ensures availability of items/services and buyers. So long as the circle is maintained, online or penny auctions build a strong client base that keeps the business running.

Auction sites do provide strong interaction forums for their bidders. From the forums, bidders exchange their experiences and successful bidding tips. New bidders always have a place from where to learn the ropes before embarking on actual bidding. It is important to pint out that not all bidders bid for buying items or services on offer. Some bid for the enjoyment that they derive from 'playing the game' so to speak. This makes it necessary for genuine bidders to know how to place their bids, especially on items or services whose price increase at a fast rate.
