While the look of men's swimming shorts have remained largely the same over the years, they have certainly advanced in technology. Some swimming shorts are still made from cotton these days but quite often they are made from synthetic fabrics such as rayon. Unlike cotton swimwear, fabrics like these don't absorb as much water.

Swimming with cotton made swim shorts can be a drag, literally, since they take on so much water. Men's swimming shorts made with modern fibers help to improve performance. Not only are modern fabrics more comfortable to wear since they dry quicker, they also create less drag in the water. They are incredibly practical too and provide a dual functionality. You could be sunning yourself on the beach one minute, playing soccer the next and then into the sea without having to change once. You don't even need wear them as just swim shorts.

Men's swimming shorts come in a variety of lengths usually midway down the thighs. If you prefer shorts that are a lot more modest, you could swim with a pair of board shorts which can come down to the knees. Generally, board shorts have printed designs on them but you can also find plain ones. Designed for surfers they allow the surfer to swim in them, although they aren't specifically made for swimming.

In comparison, men's swimming shorts can look rather plain and not particularly fashionable. While not exciting, there are many different colors to select from. If you're out shopping for a pair, try and pick the shortest length that you are ok with. Drag is the main problem with long shorts which is why pro swimmers wear swimming briefs. A short pair of swim shorts will enable you to perform better.

Swimming briefs, although rather short are your best option if you want more speed in the water. For those that are a little more conscious or prefer something less revealing choose a pair of swimming trunks that aren't too long. On top of choosing the right swimwear, pick a pair that is the right size as you won't want them slipping off when swimming.
