Adressing the Issues of the Different Age Demographics and Their Related Use in Group Therapy - By: Chris Hanson

Although there is much merit to be discovered with the use of psychotherapy, other forms of therapy have also recorded significant records of success—group therapy is one such example. Incorporating the basic principles of modern therapy types, i.e cognitive behavioral therapy, group treatment functions within the context of a number of clients and a single counselor. With this method, people in therapy are able to more comfortably express their fears and doubts whilst benefiting greatly from the opinions and life experiences of others. The role of a psychotherapist in group therapy is defined more in line with those of a moderator , providing structure and topics amidst discussions whilst ensuring that all that is expressed is better aimed towards the growth and developments of all the clients present. Though group therapy is primarily found among adults in a couple of areas, it is also becoming a preferred choice for therapy options geared towards the young and old.

Therapy for the young as well as for older people may commonly center around the addition of a single client and psychotherapist, but the advantages of social contact and interaction for these age groups are strong persuasions for the adoption of group therapy. Helping children to form healthy and rewarding social skills and causing them to feel more comfortable and less alienated or “different” during therapy sessions, group therapy for children and young adults can prove to be a valuable way to reach youth. Amongst older people, the use of group therapy introduces a sense of oneness and comfort which is supported by the fact that others have equating mental or life issues to share.

The benefits of Group therapy can be applied to many psychological conditions regardless of how old the person might be. Considering the benefits of group therapy as compared to individual treatment may be a smart choice for those approaching therapy themselves, or are seeking treatment for a family member or loved one.
