Adoption of Online Yearbooks - By: Michuele Sanders

Online yearbooks are becoming more common and popular. As digital media becomes more popular, online yearbooks are becoming more accepted by those that are creating yearbooks. Many schools are still resistant to online yearbooks, but this is changing as each year more schools are using online yearbooks either in lieu of traditional bound yearbooks or as an addition to traditional yearbooks.

You make an online yearbook the same way you would make a traditional yearbook. There are online websites that offer graphic design options in addition to their online hosting package, which helps expedite the process for people who are making their own yearbook.

The websites that provide nothing but hosting require that the schools themselves use a different graphic design program to put the yearbook together before it's uploaded. This creates a situation where the graphic design may need to be edited after uploading to fit the constraints of the website. However, the most important part of any website is the ability to be hosted online.

Some schools use an online yearbook as a form of archival backup for their primary yearbook, which is still a traditional bound yearbook. The schools that use online yearbooks as a form of archive frequently have very few features for their online yearbook because they aren't intended to be used by the students themselves, just as a source of the material in case of a loss of the original document.

Some schools have started using online yearbooks as a full featured co-yearbook with their traditional yearbooks. These are frequently schools that are in the process of transitioning to online only yearbooks, and are using traditional yearbooks as a way to ease that transition for those that prefer traditional bound yearbooks.

There are an increasingly large amount of schools, however, that are using only online yearbooks. As digital media become more common and expected, online yearbooks represent a more widely and easily accessible form of information than traditional bound yearbooks. They are also less expensive to produce, as there are no printing costs associated with an online yearbook.

The objection to online yearbooks generally comes from the faculty advisors, administrators and parents of the students and not the students themselves. Most students prefer the online yearbook for its added portability and functionality and because of their increased familiarity with online media.

As time goes by, online yearbooks become more and more accepted by the people who are responsible for making yearbooks. This results in less expensive, more feature rich and easily accessible yearbooks than traditional bound yearbooks. Overcoming the stigma of online media will open the door to a new era of better yearbooks, ones that are suited to the needs of the students of today.
