Adjusting to College: The Peculiarities of Life after School - By: Ket Ledford

In preparing to go college, one of the aspects that should be kept in mind is to clearly distinguish between college and school. The fact that college is not school should be understandable not only in the context of educational requirement, but also in behavioral context as well. The latter is not because you grew older, as the difference between finishing high school and going to college can be counted in weeks and months. In order to clarify the peculiarities of college life and the behavioral adjustments that should made, this article will provide some points for reflection.

Responsibility

“With great power, comes great responsibility”. The aforementioned quote from Spiderman might sound a little stupid and silly, specifically for those unfamiliar with the context, but it nevertheless, truly reflects the behavioral change that one should address in college. Your new powers in that regard are related to the reduced control, and the intentions to do things you were not allowed to, or did not have the courage to do in school. In that regard, stories of challenging and funny episodes in college life might be amusing to hear, taking the perception if someone did it then I should too is totally stupid. Self-regulation should be the basis of the control in college, rather than semi-mythical stories of other students and plots of tasteless, although funny, teen comedies. Accordingly, it should be stated that being distinguished in college should not be always connected to silly actions, where one’s own personality can be reflected in many other aspects as well.

Time Management

The point of time management is directly related to the previous point of responsibility. The main principle in college that there so much to do and so little time is mostly true. The difference might be seen in that in school you were slightly guided in your actions, while with the many options available in the college you will have to manage your time individually. Accordingly, you will have to set your priorities on your own, as the responsibility of the priorities set and the time that you will devote to each one will be solely your responsibility.
