It has caused conflicting symptoms in patients, especially those with possible cardiac issues, only to find out that it was nothing but a case of acid reflux. Described as "heartburn" by some, this rather aggravating and sometimes painful symptom can be triggered by many food items like coffee, spicy foods, garlic, tomatoes and vinegar just to name a few. Because not everyone reacts the same way, knowing what foods are "our" triggers and likely to cause a bout of acid reflux could help us to continue to enjoy the foods we like the most without the ensuing discomfort.

Although reflux can be reduced with some lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, eating less at each meal and losing weight, there are certain foods that could assist in a positive acid reflux diet and we shall talk about them today. The most natural thing for someone to reach for when they are thirsty is a soda or some other citrus drink like orange or grapefruit juice however as someone who suffers from reflux you should consider a glass of water as a safer alternative.

We all need our protein to maintain our strength so things like eggs and meats are a good choice however when selecting meats you should choose beef that is extra lean, chicken should be skinless. Fish is also an excellent source of protein all without the added fat. If you like having eggs in the morning or if you prefer eggs instead of meat, egg whites or egg substitutes could be used instead of the yolk which is also very high in cholesterol.

An acid reflux diet should include all the food groups needed to keep an average person healthy, such as protein, starches and the like. Vegetables are an important part of any diet but some vegetables like raw onions and mashed potatoes should be replaced with baked potatoes, green beans and broccoli. When choosing fruit for your diet look for banana, any kid of apple whether fresh or dried or if you prefer Apple juice will be just as good.

If you are really serious about avoiding repeat occurrences of acid reflux some basic food items to consider as part of your diet should be rice, corn bread, or multi grain bread. Beef up your sandwich with fat free cream cheese, feta or goat cheese, all of which are considered good food items to introduce to sufferers of acid reflux. For those who prefer a salad, any dressing you choose should be low in fat.

Finally, keep in mind that what works for you may not be as effective as for your neighbor or your friend down the street. For deserts you should stick with items such as fat free cookies, potato chips that are baked only and jelly beans. Items such as rice cakes, pretzels and graham crackers are also considered as great snacks for individuals who suffer with reflux. So now that you have a better understand of what acid reflux really is and what foods are better for you lets remember to choose your diet wisely.
