Achievements Equal Success? - By: Laurie Noepel

Goals and what we actually have accomplished really make us stand out above the rest. Too many times in life we are carefully judged by those around us is it our peers, our co-workers, and our bosses. We go in each day at work and do our best and sometimes the odds are against in the field we are in and we feel very defensive because we know people are talking. Does this mean that we need to pretend to be someone we are not to fit the mold of their expectations? Years ago I did this ago in a very unhealthy marriage where I turned into this man's "puppet". Oh you want my hair shorter, more makeup, talk like you, okay dear.

Recently, a friend of mine was on an interview and she explained how the manager kept drilling her for more achievements and accomplishments when she stated at least three very strong ones. At times I think we forget how wonderful we are and all the successes we have had either in our personal life or professional life. It was to my great surprise that my friend after she prepared for the job, had the experience, and past record of accomplishments in the same field interviewed did not get the offer. The manager at the end of the interview told my friend that he was on the fence and was not at all wowed by my friend. She went on to ask him why and he said that she didn't have enough achievements in his opinion but if she could think of more and either email or call him that he would consider her a candidate. My friend told the manager that she normally does not boast of her accomplishments and that is just who she is but is competent to do the job.

After hearing that story I guess anyone up and running for a position should write out not just your strengths but past victories too. Although in my opinion achievements of the past are one thing but what can you do now is the main question. My friend left there feeling depleted and a bit intimidated by this gentleman. I told her she has done great things and not to worry as if God shuts one door a bigger and better door will easily open.

In conclusion, there are many ways to achieve success and achievements and it is not where you've been but where you are going. There are many variables to why certain situations worked out the way they did in life and sometimes it is not your fault. When it is you learn from the experience and become a better and stronger individual. Sometimes the business model set up for you is not a proven system. We are all learning and striving to be better people as life is a journey and results are our life.
