Accountancy – Entry/Training - By: CardiffJobs

We all know the familiar expression of how someone has left the circus and trained to be an accountant, and if you take this saying too literally then anyone would point out that not anybody can train to become an accountant. Least of all clowns as there are enough of those in high-ranking positions as it is.

Those that are starting to enter the world of accountancy will usually possess a degree though, although it will help your cause, this isn’t mandatory. What is expected at training level is that an applicant will have gained at least two A-Levels or GCSEs in English and, surprisingly enough, Maths. Those without a degree will usually start training as an Accountancy Technician and then progress towards full qualification though this can take a while longer.

Graduates that are training to be a chartered accountant require undergoing a training contract with an employer which will usually last roughly three years and can involve a series of examinations and work experience.

For other specific accountancy jobs, immediate training to become a professional Public Sector Accountant requires enrolment onto a graduate training scheme where a degree is necessary. Though no specific discipline is needed, possessing an accounting, finance, maths or other business-related degree will be more pertinent to the course. Training to become a Private Practice Accountant has a similar training method whereby applicants with lesser qualifications such as business or finance diplomas can start training as a technician and work their way up, whereas those with degrees can start the training programme straight away. For those without a degree, training is necessary for either of the following qualifications: the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or for the Chartered Accounting Technician (CAT). Once again, examinations are a part of the training process alongside first-hand work experience.

Therefore the quickest way to train for accountancy is to have a degree and even with such an achievement, it can still take a while to become fully qualified. It requires further years of study and hard work but the rewards will ultimately be worthwhile. Unless you prefer your job in the circus in which case carry on.
