Accident Protocol: Having a Plan - By: Art Gib

On a daily basis we climb into our cars, strap ourselves in, and go speeding down the Lincoln highway or the Pennsylvania turnpike at sixty five miles an hour. We are on the road with thousands of other people, all strapped into their cars.

We change lanes, speed up, slow down, slam on our breaks, and try to drive a straight course while watching everything that goes on around us. Sounds like a recipe for disaster doesn't it? Most of the time it's not, but there are times when something just goes wrong and suddenly an accident is unavoidable.

More often than not people come out all right from the accident, but many of them don't know what to do after the accident has occurred. If you are involved in an accident there are a few things that should be done to avoid any negative repercussions or the need for a Pennsylvania accident lawyer

First things first... plan ahead. You will want to keep any insurance information with you in the jockey box of the car. This is just a general rule of thumb. You never know when something will happen and you need to be prepared if it does. Having a disposable camera and a sheet of paper handy is a good idea as well. You want to be able to record any and all particulars of the accident for the police, for yourself, and for your insurance company.

Whatever you do when the accident occurs do not leave the scene. You will be charged with a hit and run. If it's possible, move your car off the road. If you can't do this than at least turn on your hazard lights so people know to go around you.

Call the police, wait until they get there, and make sure they have your version of the story. Do not admit to being at fault. Give all the necessary details, but don't put yourself on the spot. Make sure you get the name of the officer in case you need it later.

Exchange information with the driver of the other car. You will need his name, his insurance information, his driver's license information, and his address, and he will need yours. This will help you get the necessary compensation from his insurance if he was at fault, or help him get what he needs if you were at fault. When all is said and done you will want to report the accident to your insurance company.

Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that you do everything right, but can't get proper compensation from the insurance company or end up having legal action taken against you by the other driver. In a case like this you may want to consider finding a good Pennsylvania personal injury lawyers firm.

These lawyers will know how to handle your case and get you fair compensation or at the very least stop the legal action from the other driver. Most of the time if you've taken precautions such as those mentioned above you won't have this problem. However, it never hurts to be prepared for any situation.
