Accepting Alternative Therapies - By: Hannah Rosas

The medical world has really transformed over the years and may even be heading full circle. In days gone by it was extremely common for parents to use home remedies with the desire to cure simple ailments like the common cold, tinnitus, or sinus issues. Invariably this may have been due to lack of finances for the working class but it cannot be denied that some of those treatments strangely enough worked for many.

The medical industry was maybe quite archaic and run as we know government institutions were so over the years we maybe found that the desire to find a more natural way to tend mind and body. Nowadays and without doubt with the help of the internet skeptics abound and are quick to jump up and down when new therapies evolve with no sound scientific evidence or reason. However there are equally if not more individuals who are willing to accept this lack of evidence and 'have a go' and reach conclusions for themselves.

Take the example of Ear Candles which although they may not have been around for the claims of 'centuries' the use of ear candles in some form most definitely was being used with the last 50 years. Older folk recount many a story of their mothers applying wrapped cotton in a cone shape, dipped in beeswax in the hope of curing some ailment. Forget about the Egyptians or Chinese, this was a simple home remedy that people were willing to try.

As with all alternative therapies it can of course be dangerous to put your body at risk, especially with fire, but if due care and safety is applied then all alternative therapies will have a place in society. In deed we have seen the medical industry themselves take on board some treatments over the years.

The example of Ear Candling is an interesting one as whilst there may not be any real evidence they have certainly been used widely worldwide by many and not just in recent years. Can a fad really last for so long? Individuals are really quite smart and even if some may be naive to repeatedly try such a treatment shows that for some there is particular benefit for their individual needs.

For some ear candling is nothing more than relaxing and time out from our stressful lives. To believe they will suck lots of ear wax maybe quite far fetched but humans have certainly been drawn to the magic of fire for centuries, feeling the comfort of simple warmth. Provided we accept and act on obvious dangers and protect ourselves appropriately then we should accept that there will always be individuals willing to explore and experiment, drawing their own unbiased conclusions.
