About the Symbolism of Jewelry - By: Art Gib

Since the dawn of time we humans have adorned our bodies with jewelry made of gemstones, precious metals, shells, and any other material that could be shaped and formed into something beautiful. We wear these items for beauty, fashion, to showcase our personality, or even as a symbol of something we care about or someone we love.

These symbols can be personal, such as a heart shared by two people in love. Or they can be universal, such as peace jewelry, which uses a symbol recognized by nearly everyone to spread a beautiful message. The symbolism can also simply rest in the piece of jewelry itself, rather than the stones and charms used to create it.

Some very popular symbols used in jewel-crafting are the heart, the eye, flowers, and even a snake. The heart, of course, represents love and is often given as a gift to show one person's love for another. It doesn't have to be romantic love. Heart-shaped jewelry is very popular around Valentines Day and Mother's Day.

The eye is a symbol of the all-seeing bird-god Horus, and is sometimes believed to keep evil spirits away. It is a sort of protection. Flowers actually mean a variety of different things. To show a blossoming love the woman might wear a jeweled flower while the daisy is a representation of innocence. The snake as it is used today carries a somewhat negative connotation, but in the past the snake was used as a symbol of everlasting or eternal love. It was a romantic creature often given or used by two people in love.

The ring, of course, is often given as a symbol of friendship, love, engagement, and matrimony. The significance of the ring changes depending on where it is worn on the hand. Traditionally, rings worn on the ring finger of the left hand carry a symbol of love. Promise, engagement, and wedding rings are all worn here.

Rings are often given in friendship as well. These rings show a close, but not always romantic, relationship between two people. Friendship rings are often worn on the little finger, but they can be worn on any finger of either hand. It is also popular for people to wear rings that represent graduation and even motherhood. Motherhood rings typically use a variety of gemstones that show the birth months of their children.

The symbolism doesn't end there. We have gotten many of the symbols used today from history, but new ones are continually being created to show new beliefs, hopes, and dreams of modern people.
