About resveratrol - By: Calivita

Many of you may have heard about resveratrol. For those who haven't, it is a type of polyphenol produced by plants, in order to protect themselves against bacteria or fungi. It is most commonly found in peanuts, berries and grapes. Red wine also contains a pretty high natural dosage. What not many people know is that resveratrol is also found in cocoa and dark chocolate, this being the second larger natural source of resveratrol after red wine. The largest amount of resveratrol was found in cocoa powder, then baking chocolate and dark chocolate. Still, the amount of resveratrol found in these products, about 14-18 micrograms per serving, is a lot less smaller than 800 micrograms found in a glass of red wine.

Several studies conducted on chemical cancer induced mice have shown that resveratrol may have a benefic influence against cancer. It apparently inhibits the proliferation of several cancer cell lines. The types of cancer that were studied were colon, thyroid, pancreatic, prostate, and a few others. It did not have any effect on lung cancer, though.

Resveratrol is also good for our eyes. Oxidative stress in the retinal pigment epithelium can cause some retinal diseases. A study conducted on this matter has shown that the resveratrol reduces this oxidative stress, due to its antioxidant properties.

Its benefits can also be seen when fighting influenza. In the experiments conducted with cell cultures, the resveratrol managed to block the replication of the virus. The studies on some mice infected with influenza showed that the survival rate of those treated with resveratrol was 40% higher than of those who got placebo injections, and also that after 6 days, the infection was highly lower in mice treated with resveratrol.

This polyphenol also has some anti-diabetic effects. Studies on lab rats have shown that resveratrol has a benefical effect and ameliorates diabetes symptoms.

Its anti-inflammatory effect was studied both on rats and on rabbits. The rats were treated for paw edema, the results showing an inhibition of the inflammatory process, and the rabbits for inflammatory arthritis, which showed that Resveratrol protected the cartilage.

The reductions in brain plaque, a component of some neurodegenerative diseases, is another one of resveratrol's benefits, thus concluding that it also has neuroprotective effects.

Scientists have also tested this miraculous compound for fertility purposes. It has been noted that the sperm count in the testing group was higher than in the control group. However, the quality of it was not enhanced.

Last but not least, researchers showed that the resveratrol speeds up the metabolism, resulting in weight loss, and also raises energy levels.
