About Rheumatoid Arthritis - By: Dan Brathers

Although the reason still remains a mystery, studies have shown that women are nearly three times more likely to have rheumatoid arthritis than men. Further studies have come to the conclusion that rheumatoid arthritis actually impairs the life quality of females more than males. This reason also remains unknown. This has many scientists looking for answers as to why this may be and have considered that the medicines that have been used for this disease affect women and men in different ways.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects tissues in the body. In usual cases, the joints are mostly affected. In this case, the causes are unknown.

Researchers have undergone procedures to find out why the outcome of this disease is gender-specific. They have found that men who have gone under therapy for rheumatism respond better than women who have the same treatment. This is especially seen in terms of the swelling of their joints and their experiences with the disease.

It is always significant to consider the subjective differences when comparing the severity of the disease. If doctors put into the consideration the usual physical symptoms of the disease, people who suffer from severe pain may be deprived of medicine that may be highly effective, which, considering the high costs and extremely high risk of side-effects that can occur, is only available to sufferers who have it the worst.

During a follow-up analysis of all their findings, researchers compared the magnitude of rheumatoid arthritis in men and women who had taken the 'biological' medicines. These types of medicines are only given to sufferers who are seriously ill. The conclusions of this study showed that although women and men who had taken these medicines suffered the same magnitude of objective manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis, women expressed that they were still a lot sicker than the men were.
