AMERICANS FIGHT THE FAT - By: Easytouse

AMERICANS FIGHT THE FAT

I was listening to the national news this evening and they
had a segment on comfort food. The discussion was about how
we here in America supersize our food. The segmented
commented on restaurants with menus high in calories and
high in fat. The information was released on the Extreme
Eating Report. An interesting note is that New York has
made it mandatory to list the caloric content of each meal
on the menu. What was found was that customers started
making different choices.

Some stats for you to ponder: sixty-four percent of people
are overweight in the US. And twenty-seven percent of
Americans are classified as obese. See chart.

According the CDC being overweight or obese is a result of
an energy imbalance. What does mean? Well essentially this
occurs when a person eats too much (intake of calories) and
does not move enough. (Physical activity). So, here we go
again with the old eat right (diet) and exercise (move the
old body). Again if you like me this easier said than done.
Especially as a person gets older the harder is to stick
with any type of routine. Now I’m not talking about the die
hard type “A” personalities. You folks will do what it
takes to get where you ant to be regarding your weight.

However everyone is different, if you noticed we all look
different. I am sure you know someone who eats all he or
she wants and doesn’t gain a pound. Others like me I walk
by food and gain five pounds. This has to do with your gene
make up, your rate of metabolism, behavior, ones
environment, culture and socioeconomic background. The CDC
believes behavior and environment playing a large role in
causing people to be overweight.

Adapted from the U.S. General’s Call to action to Prevent
and Decrease Overweight and Obesity, 2001 (CDC website)

When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight for a
lifetime, the bottom line is – calories count! Weight
management is all about balance – balancing the number of
calories you consume with the number of calories your body
uses or “burns off”

• A calorie is defined as a unit of energy supplied by
food. A calorie is a calorie regardless of its source.
Whether you’re eating carbohydrates, fats, sugars, or
proteins, all of them contain calories.

• Calorie balance is like a scale. To remain in balance and
maintain your body weight, the calories consumed (from
foods) must be balanced by the calories used (in normal
body functions, daily activities, and exercise).

Well so much for the Surgeon General. What does he know
anyway? From where I sit, I want easy, and results. A
system I could use in a daily manner. Well help is here, a
