ADHD Symptoms Affected by Seasonal Allergies - By: Sagbee C

Certain periods of the year are the worst for children with ADHD as these seasons can trigger off seasonal allergies in children which would in turn aggravate the symptoms of ADHD. This fact was discovered by doctors at the Long Island College Hospital recently. It has also been an established fact that children with ADHD generally tend to suffer more from seasonal allergies than those without ADHD. This has in turn helped in garnering support for some rigorous evaluation period as well as a drug-free management of ADHD in a natural way.

The study involved 20 teenagers who were diagnosed with ADHD. The results of this study were presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. There was a chronic history of allergies in the family, however, only a couple had been tested previously for allergic symptoms. Participants in the study were screened at the start of the study for allergic rhinitis.

They were also given a blood test in order to check to see if they had allergies to pets, trees, feathers, mold, grass and cockroaches. The results of the test revealed that at least 8 teenagers suffered from asthma and atopic dermatitis, 9 tested positive for allergies, while 3 had allergic rhinitis. There were at least two symptoms of allergies on 15 of these teens.

The results of the study led researchers to come to a conclusion that children as well as teens with ADHD may have underlying symptoms of allergies that were undetected and these allergies may aggravate symptoms or cause disturbances in sleep such as nasal obstruction etc. Hence it has been recommended that children with ADHD must be tested for allergies in order to help overcome these symptoms.

So what does one do after discovering that their child’s ADHD has been triggered by environmental allergens? Firstly, find out the exact cause of the allergy and what is causing the allergy. The conservative tests can reveal an allergy to dust, mold, animal fur, pollen etc. But sometimes the child can have a food allergy also. This would require a different battery of tests such as the manual muscle tests. These allergic reactions could be caused even due to food coloring. An ADHD diet will help keep the allergies at bay.

Here are some natural tips to keep allergies out of bounds without the use of medication:

Vacuum using a HEPA filter at least once every week. The dust will get suctioned and not fly around.

Pycnogenol supplements have helped in soothing allergic symptoms in children with ADHD.

Butterbur is a herb which helps block the biochemical which cause allergies due to grass pollen.

During springtime and fall, ensure that your child wears a dust mask while going outdoors. Although it might look a little silly, it will help keep out dust, pollen, mold spores (airborne) and fur etc. Studies conducted on subjects showed that paper filters helped in preventing and reducing allergies like sniffles, watery eyes, sneezing, dry throat, as well as itching.
