Secondly protect yourself. Seek and choose a reputable online dating service. Check with friends who have tried online dating. Search a few sites and read the terms and condition before signing up.

It is common knowledge not to readily give out personal information to strangers. Information like real names, addresses, phone numbers, and place of employment should not be reveal too soon. Do not give that information to anyone online until you are confident that they are who they say they are.

There are also a few mistakes that you should avoid when dating online. Out in the "real" world, being aggressive, demanding perfection and even little white lies are all ingredients for success but not in online dating. There is a big difference between being aggressive or confident and being too aggressive, over-confident, or just plain sleazy or slimy. Try to remember that you are not trying to close a business deal and keep the relationship progressing at a slow but steady pace.

Men should be wary of women who seem too financially needy. If they ask for money, cut the relationship off immediately. They are not looking for love or even friendship but all they need is financial help.

Little white lies and false fronts won't work. Do not pretend someone you are not or send someone else's photo. Be honest from the beginning of a relationship. Make your profiles interesting but don't make false statements that brag about yourself.

Many have tried online dating and some are married with kids now. Online dating really works if everyone does not abuse it.
