A sci-fi murder mystery - By: Andrew Gray

A thrilling, thrill a minute roller-coaster of a novel from the not-too-distant future! An independent Scotland has been part of the United States of Europe for decades when a team of Scots miners return to Earth from the moon, Europa, which circles Jupiter. Due to a chance discovery made while using VR in order for them to get accustomed to Earth gravity, the safety of the planet and of the Solar System are found to be under threat.

The discovery of the murder of a young girl leads them to make a frantic attempt to find out the cause. Who did it and why? What are the mysterious powers that are out to stop the young Scots returning to Earth alive? Interplanetary space is huge and even vast spaceships are tiny microcosms of life in which the vacuum of space can swallow you up in a moment.

Back on Earth, there are forces at work too. In Mitch Strang’s home city of Edinburgh, events are unfolding which will impact on his life. Mitch’s father is a high-powered Scottish lawyer who works in Brussels and whose situation is a matter for gossip. Alan, an old family friend is, perhaps, the only reliable person to whom Mitch can cling and there is some suggestion that he is, perhaps, more than just a friend of his mother’s.

Scotland is now a very different place , while England, to the south, is now Muslim and not part of the USE. England would have Scotland’s distilleries closed down, if they could, as their Muslim sensitivities are offended by the distilling of alcohol just over the border. In fact, Scotland now reaches much further south than before independence, since the northern counties of England seceded to remain within a generally Christian nation.

Both stories unfold as Mitch and his friends struggle to survive and use every means at their disposal to defeat those who would have them silenced – permanently. This is not a tale for the squeamish. Battles in the future can be brief and vicious.

Meet Raoul Benodet and his men; ex French Foreign Legionnaires. Each is a highly-trained mercenary, completely loyal and under orders to kill all who stand in his way. What is Raoul’s purpose? Who is he and what is DXT?

Science has enabled Man to travel among the planets and asteroids between Earth, the Moon, Mars and Jupiter. There are even ships where people live, like unbelievably huge ocean-liners, plying the routes between the settlements which have sprung up in unwelcoming places. Yet human ingenuity has enabled a normal quality of life to begin, even while, back on Earth, the United States of America remains the leading world super-power, if only because no one can afford to allow her to default on her massive debts.

The tale is one of courage against the odds; of fighting hand-to-hand ; capturing other space-vessels and attempting to defeat the forces of evil that threaten to take over. Even the little men have to fight back when push comes to shove and these are normal civilians from a young nation, suffering, as do the rest, from excessive taxation and nit-picking rule by a greedy European state. Will they succeed? Will they stop the hidden power which they have, unwittingly, uncovered, from taking over?
