A review of the HeatStar HSVFR Series Vent Free Heater - By: Scott Workman

Vent free gas heaters have long been popular for residential and commercial zone heating or to heat room spaces from 300 to 1000 square feet. They are also great for emergency back-up heating. Since they do not require electrical power, the heater can operate during a power outage.

The concerns of using a vent free gas heater inside the dwelling space of the home have long been addressed for nearly 30 years. The good news is, those concerns have dwindled over the past 10 years due, at least in part, to a stellar record of safety and customer satisfaction. And this no doubt has accounted for the dramatic increase in vent free heater sales all over North America.

Unfortunately, this increase in vent free heater demand means that (like almost everything else these days) cheap, inexpensive versions have found their way into the heating marketplace. In fact, diminished heater quality has produced poor heater reliability, thereby undermining the sales of more reliable, higher quality heaters.

Perhaps the most obvious thing you will notice when searching online is that many of the least expensive heaters advertised are just plain ugly, boxy looking heaters. Generally, these will sell for a lot less than ones that have a much better looking fit and finish. If you’ve looked at vent free heaters online, you’re probably a little confused why some are very inexpensive ($150.00 or less) and others are considerably more (up to $399.00). Since there are so many to choose from, we’d like to review just one brand and model to give you a basis for comparison – the HeatStar (by Enerco) HSVFR series.

The HSVFR series vent free heater is designed to heat residential spaces such as offices, living rooms, sun rooms, room additions, basements, garages, and more. This heater comes in three sizes – 10,000, 20,000 and 30,000 BTU’s. You can expect the 10,000 BTU model to heat up to 300 square feet, the 20,000 model up to 600 square feet, and the 30,000 BTU model up to 1,000 square feet. Of course, ceiling height, insulation and whether or not the space is connected to adjacent living spaces all affect the overall performance of the heater.

At first glance, you’ll notice that the HeatStar HSVFR series is a more attractive heater, designed to fit into just about any interior space.

A picture really can tell a story. Perhaps the most obvious thing you will notice when searching online is that some of the heaters advertised are just plain ugly, boxy looking heaters. Generally, these will sell for a lot less than ones that have a much better looking fit and finish. The more attractive looking heaters also carry a better warranty and are made to last longer. For instance, one brand may sell for around a hundred bucks. Wow, what a bargain! Then you notice that it comes with a 90 day manufacturer’s warranty.

By contrast, the more attractive looking heaters carry a better warranty and are made to last longer. the HeatStar vent free heater has a much more attractive finish and has a 3 year manufacturer’s warranty.
