A Walking Holiday in Kenya – Is it Your Style? - By: Tony Maniscalco

You may be one of the many people thinking carefully about whether a Kenya walking holiday is something that would appeal to you or not. Now, the first step in your decision may be to have an intensive debate about whether it is pronounced “Ken-ya” or “Keyn-ya”!
But once you get that one sorted out, you can get onto the serious business of deciding whether this type of holiday is your style or not.

The comparison

If you like a holiday that's very predictable and which follows a mass-tourism path, then maybe a Kenya walking holiday isn't for you. That's because every day you'll find yourself going to different places and walking around in small groups as you explore the countryside, the people and the wildlife. That doesn't mean that this type of holiday is an endurance test - far from it in fact. You'll typically be based in a modern hotel of a very high comfort level which serves as your resting place and launch pad for the excursions and journeys of the day ahead. You also needn't worry that the itineraries will be too demanding. Expert tour leaders, who are very familiar with the local country and sights, lead all of the guided walks. They will define a programme of events that will be easily achievable by everyone within the small party. These walks may be aimed at looking at local wildlife (some trips around wildlife reserves may be in Land Rovers due to the distances involved), the flora and fauna along the coastal pathways, or the huge variety of birdlife available at places such as Crater Lake.

Another trip might involve exploring a local town or village to see how Kenyan people live, work and lead their lives. Perhaps you’ll be interested in seeing a local market or the manufacture of local crafts. You might be interested also in walking around a tea plantation or perhaps seeing where coffee beans are grown - a product for which Kenya is justifiably world-famous.

Another day you may be rather more interested in spending time on some of Kenya’s staggeringly beautiful beaches, and the fact that you have walked there may mean that your tour leader is able to show you coves and locations that many ordinary visitors on Kenya beach holidays never get to see. Of course, if you really enjoy crowded locations, packed beaches and needing to get up at the crack of dawn to try and get a lounger by the swimming pool, then perhaps a Kenya walking holiday won't really appeal to you!

How to do it

There are various Kenya walking holidays available based around different centres, with something for those who enjoy a more demanding walking holiday, and others designed for those who enjoy an emphasis on relaxation. Generally speaking, the holiday will run to a set itinerary and everything will be taken care of, including accommodation, food and refreshments, transport where applicable, and the provision of tour leader services.

Holidays typically start at Nairobi, where the airport is well served from many of the world's major cities. There are holidays of variable duration but if you can afford a slightly longer stay, you may enjoy your holiday that much more because you'll be able to get around and see more of this magnificent country. So instead of simply dreaming about a Kenya walking holiday, why not make it a reality by making some enquiries now?
