A Study discloses adiponectin is prone to fracture - By: Gregory Fraser

One of the body’s obesity-related hormones, adiponectin is linked to osteoporosis, which causes an increase in the risk of fracture, the Science Daily website says, quoting a research group from Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. However, "the detection of graphite in metal-on-metal hips might lead to more durable devices".

Basically a protein hormone, adiponectin is produced and secreted exclusively by adipocytes (fat cells) that regulate the metabolism of lipids and glucose. It influences the body's response to insulin. The hormone also posseses anti-inflammatory effects on the cells lining the walls of blood vessels, MedicineNet.com reported.

High blood levels of adiponectin are associated with a reduced risk of heart attack, medical research says. Low levels of adiponectin are found in people who are obese and who are at increased risk of a heart attack, MedicineNet.com reports.

The human skeletal system is not just bones, vertebrae and joints. It is an vigorous organ that is continually associated to the brain, muscles and fatty tissue. Stem cells -- the body's most important cells -- are formed in the skeleton, which the hormones are also found that govern the body's blood sugar and obesity by sending signals to other organs, according to the Science Daily website. The latest research discloses that elevated levels of obesity hormone in the blood could be associated to osteoporosis.

Dan Mellström, a researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy and consultant at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, both in Sweden, is a leading expert in osteoporosis. Being a part of an intercontinental research project studying the danger issues allied with osteoporosis in elderly men, he and his colleagues have been looking into the obesity hormone adiponectin. This study has now revealed that men and women with high levels of this hormone also have more sensitive skeletons and more fractures, as well as abridged muscle strength and lesser muscle mass, thus aggregating the peril of fractures. High adiponectin concentration give the impression to be connected to augment functional aging, the Science Daily website says.

High levels of adiponectin among the elderly seem to be related with both abridged operational of the musculature and a more fragile skeleton, Mellstrom says. This means a higher level risk of fractures and falls, and also improved mortality, says the Science Daily online resource.

The results are based on the Mr OS study, led from the Sahlgrenska Academy, which had looked into the risk factors for osteoporosis in elderly men. The study includes around 11,000 men in Sweden, the USA and Hong Kong.

This fracture may lead tip to hip pains that encourages patients into get hip replacement and faulty implants, against which patients filed DePuy Pinnacle Lawsuit.
