A Simple Guide to Garage Door Repair - By: Sara Morris

Your garage door may just be one of the many access points to your home, but it can surely do a lot beyond that. It can improve the value and look of your home, increase your garage uses, protect the items stored in your garage, and make your garage the safest place to be for your vehicle. That is why it is important to keep it always in good condition. However, just like the other access points in your home such as your back door and front door, the garage door can also get broken after some time. When this happens, you should take immediate action to repair it. Otherwise, theft, inconveniences, accidents and other unfortunate events may arise solely because you fail to repair your damaged garage door immediately.

Garage door repair may not be as complicated as you think. Even if you are not mechanically inclined, you can perform the task yourself. Begin by knowing what the problem is. Is it a garage door that won’t open or close a door that falls after releasing, or a door that sticks when closing or opening? If your garage door won’t open or close, simply inspect on the keypad to see if the garage door opener is functioning. If it’s the cause, all you need to do is to reprogram the opener.

Next, if the garage door sticks when closing or opening, check on the metal rollers and hinges. They may just need lubricating. Also, check on the tracks and see if they are dirty or clogged. If they are, try cleaning the tracks with a normal household cleaning liquid and then lubricate them afterwards. Lastly, if the door falls after releasing, it could be due to worn extension springs. If that is the case, simply replace your garage door springs with new one.

Those three mentioned above are among the most common garage door problems. If you will notice, the two main parts that could be the main culprits of your garage door failing to function properly are the tracks and the springs. The tracks, for one, play a vital role in the opening or closing mechanism of your garage door. To hold them in place, metal brackets are used. Now, when your garage door stops working, inspect on these brackets to see if they are loose. If they are, slowly tighten the screws or bolts. But if not, take a look at the tracks themselves because they might be bent, dented, or knocked out of shape.

To resolve this, try knocking the tracks back into shape by using a mallet. But if this does not work, you better get replacement. As for the springs, the solution varies on the type of spring used. Often times, resolving spring problems just lie mainly on doing some adjustments. But if your door uses a torsion spring, better employ a garage door repair professional because you could get yourself severely injured when you try to resolve it the wrong way.

Garage door repair is really something that should not be ignored. So be sure to keep this basic garage door repair guide in mind.
