A Short Diamond History - By: jacksmith

Incredibly, diamonds have been dated to 3000 years ago, in India. Their presence was probably due to their decorative properties rather than any intrinsic value. They were also used as a mascot or talisman and carried by soldiers in battle.

In the Dark Ages, St. Hildegarde notes how a diamond held while making the sign of the cross would encourage the healing of wounds and be instrumental in healing illness. There is little evidence that this advice actually worked.

The worth of a diamond became more evident in the Middle Ages. Owners of mining companies would encourage the myth that diamonds were poisonous. It was evident that mineworkers were swallowing diamonds to smuggle them out of the mine and mine owners lost a great deal of money. At this time, more valuable and fabulous diamonds were being found, not least the Koh-I-Noor and the Blue Hope.

Other areas of the world woke up to the fact that diamonds were big business. Huge mines were discovered in South Africa and there were finds in Borneo and Brazil.

Australia's Diamonds

The 19th century saw Australia joining the diamond rush. After much exploration diamond producing began in earnest in the 1970's. October 2nd 1979 is a memorable date for Australia's diamond industry for this is when the famous Argyle pipe near Lake Argyle was discovered by geologists. Since that time Argyle is responsible for producing over a third of the world's diamonds.
