A Roman History Lesson at Père-Lachaise - By: Alfred Halfnight

Since its origins dating back to Roman times, Paris has an incredible historical background. This can also be seen if you take a stroll round the 20th arrondissement and head for Pere-Lachaise cemetery. Le Cimetière du Père-Lachaise has been rubber stamped as the biggest cemetery in Paris, and home to several famous people who have been buried here from rock legends to authors, painters and philosophers. Close to Rue Gambetta, Père Lachaise also has the distinct honour of being the most popular visited cemetery in the entire world, bringing in millions of tourists each and every year.

It is also significant because it house some of the most significant people that have played an influential part on French history, culture and life over the past two centuries, including three World War I memorials. The name of the cemetery originates from the confessor to Louis XIV, called Père François de la Chaise. After the burials of renowned French author Moliere and poet La Fontaine in 1804, more and more people clamoured to be buried amongst the famous resident at Pere- Lachaise. This was a successful plan as in a matter of years, the cemetery went from housing under 40 residents to over 33,000 in a short period. And at the last count, Pere Lachaise is now home to more than 330,000 people who are buried amongst France’s greats.

The best way to get to Pere-Lachaise is either by the Métro station Philippe Auguste which can be found on line 2, or there is actually an official Père Lachaise station, on line 3, just 500 metres away. Famous gravestones that tourists may spot include Oscar Wilde, Emile Zola and Jim Morrison from The Doors. Make Paris your next destination and stay in an airport hotel Charles De Gaulle that offers excellent transport links. One such venue is the Sheraton Paris Airport Hotel with extensive fitness centre and direct RER service just a stones throw away. Another hotel CDG that is certain to offer guests an enjoyable vacation includes the stylish Mercure Paris Roissy Charles De Gaulle providing a free shuttle service and superb French cuisine.
