Electrolux have manufactured the first and only canister vacuum to feature two HEPA filters that can be cleaned on-board – you simply press a switch that rotates the filter so that the old one is cleaned while the new one gets to work. But does the Electrolux Twin Clean vacuum cleaner deliver on its promise and does it match the performance of other vacuum cleaners?

Electrolux claim to make the best bagless canister vacuum, the Twin Clean. Its main features are that you can remove and empty the dust cup using just one hand, the brush head automatically adjusts to different floor types, the two HEPA filters are designed in such a way that you don’t ever have to wash or replace the filter; when the ‘clean filter’ light comes on, you simply flip the filter cartridge so that the dirty filter is replaced by the clean filter and the dirty filter is then clean by the vacuum itself.

The Twin Clean has other design features but there’s no doubt that its biggest selling point is that you don’t have to ever clean the filters combined with string suction. Electrolux are to be applauded for trying to develop a vacuum cleaner based on consumer wants but does the Twin Clean deliver the performance expected of a bagless vacuum in this price range? Many consumers don’t think that it does.

There have been complaints that when the bin becomes full the machine tends to turn itself off and overheat. The vacuum often has to be turned off and time to pass for the machine to cool. Also, many report that the suction of the Electrolux Twin Clean reduces over time.

The respected organization Consumer Reports found that Electrolux suggests using its Twin Clean canister's "powerful brushroll" for deep-cleaning, which this model did well in the carpet tests. But the tough pet-hair test stopped it cold.

Many found that the filters did not clean themselves properly and that they had to be removed and cleaned by hand.

Having said all that, the Electrolux Twin Clean vacuum cleaner is a good vacuum cleaner with the innovative design feature of automatic filter cleaning and for most domestic situations, it’s perfectly adequate. But the fact is that the Twin Clean is an expensive vacuum cleaner and most consumers expect better from a vacuum cleaner in that price category.
